PHOTOGRAPHY GRANTS

In here you can find a list of some of the numerous photography project grants which can provide photographers with funding to support his project's production, distribution and promotion. Some are for local photographers, others accept photographers from around the world. Depending on the grant, submissions can be based on project proposals, project samples or existing work. Grant money may apply to new, completed or ongoing photography projects. Different areas are covered, such as photojournalism, editorial projects, emerging artist projects, humanistic photo projects.

PHOTOJOURNALISM / EDITORIAL

Various organizations, including non-profit organizations, private foundations and large photography enterprises, support grants for photojournalism, editorial and documentary photography. These grants range from $5,000 to $30,000. Please check each website for dates and other relevant information.

Getty Images Grants for Editorial Photography (from April 1 to May 1)

W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund Grant (deadline May 31)

The Aftermath Project | Documentary Photography Grants (usually from mid August to November)

The Aftermath Project | Sahrawi Grant (deadline March 25)
Special grant for covering the Sahrawi people.

Alexia Foundation Professional Grant (deadline January 18, for 2011)

Alexia Foundation Student Grant (deadline February 1, for 2011)
For students, the possibility to receive a full- or half-tuition scholarship to study photojournalism in the Syracuse University, London.

Howard Chapnick Grant, W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund (deadline May 31)
For editorial projects, for fields as editing research, education and management, not intended for the production of photographs.

Pierre & Alexandra Boulat Award (last deadline June 30, 2010)

Reportage Social Documentary Grant (bi-annual, next edition 2012)
For documentary projects to be developed in Australia. Photographers can be from outside.

Open Society Foundation - Audience Engagement Grants (deadline May 13)
Supports photographers to take an existing body of work on a social justice or human rights issue and devise an innovative way of using that work as a catalyst for social change.

Open Society Foundation - Moving Walls Exhibition (deadline April 1)
Moving Walls is an exhibition series that features six to seven discrete bodies of work exhibited at our offices in New York and Washington, D.C.

Open Society Foundation - Production Grants for Individuals (closed, will open in early 2012)
Grant and training opportunity for documentary photographers from Central Asia, the South Caucasus, Afghanistan, Mongolia, and Pakistan.



EMERGING ARTISTS

Emerging artists grants can support photography projects based on artistic or creative qualities to up-and-coming photographers who demonstrate special perspectives to different themes. Grant awards range from $1,000 to $15,000.

Burn Magazine (curated by Magnum photographer David Allan Harvey, deadline is May 1)

Humble New Photography Grant (spring deadline January 14; for fall deadline please check the website)
Given twice annually (fall and spring), the grant is a $1,000 cash award that recognizes the strongest new proposal in contemporary art photography as submitted to Humble Arts Foundation.



HUMANISTIC

Humanistic photography grants support photography projects that promote positive change and report on social issues and individuals. Humanistic grants range from $1,500 to $20,000.

OTHER GRANTS

Some grants accept submissions for projects in multiple photography genres. These grants may accept submissions for category awards such as general photographic excellence, photographic essay, photojournalism and digital media.
